Default Man Plants Mysterious Seeds Sent From China

    CNN
    August 2 2020

The US Department of Agriculture is warning people to watch out for unsolicited packages of seeds shipped from China.

Experts are concerned the seeds could be an invasive species and are warning people not to plant them.

Before word got out, a man in Booneville, Arkansas planted the seeds and they've been growing in his garden for two months. The Arkansas Department of Agriculture is unsure what kind of plant it is and plans to remove it.

I cannot imagine why anybody would plant unknown seeds, especially coming from an unfriendly country. It says the state is going to remove this man's plants, and I hope they do it asap. But what if somebody planted them and didn't report it? Think what a whirlwind that action could reap!

How do they already know what the flower and the fruit look like?

Because the plant has been growing for two months. OK, it's just a plant but no one can predict what consequences will accrue. China did not send out tens of thousands of these seeds on a whim. It should have been grown by a responsible agency under secure conditions and pollinated by hand so that no bees were involved to cross-pollinate other species. But this is Arkansas, so what can I say?

Patty, there is a picture on top of the page. Looks like a typical squash flower.

Right. It's just that I'm not a gardener, and I'm surprised it only took two months from planting to fruit-bearing.

More on this. Seems there is more than one type of seed.

And the ones in the tiny picture are definitely not squash plants.

Meaning what? Arkansas has a higher rate of stupid people living in it than other states?

TBH, several of America's southern states, in what's called the "Bible Belt," have a reputation for a low level of common sense. Florida seems to be one of the highest offenders; an awful lot of stories about pranks and maneuvers that went pear-shaped begin, "Florida man..."
"Florida man, attempting to climb a razor wire fence..."
"Florida man, in an effort to subdue a 7 foot alligator..."
"Florida man, carrying a box of fireworks to a campfire..."
    And so forth.

I hope you aren't originally from Arkansas, Patty because clearly nothing personal was intended!

Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia has a similar reputation. Each year an award is given for the most stupid action.

No, I'm not from the South, though my kids and grandkids all ended up there. I'm from the Midwest. Just standing up for the underdogs.
