Default Syrian Seeds Could Save US Wheat From Climate Menace

Ancient Syrian grass rescued from Aleppo is resistant to pests devastating American farms

Inside a Kansas greenhouse, a buzzing horde of flies set about laying waste to 20,000 seedlings. But as researchers watched, there was one species of growth that remained untouched – an ancient Syrian grass known as Aegilops tauschii. Now those Syrian seeds, once stored in a vault outside of Aleppo, could end up saving US wheat from the menaces of climate change.
From 2000 to 2015, average temperatures in the US midwest rose from 1 to 2 degrees fahrenheit above the 20th-century average.

Is it just me, or does anyone else see a metaphor between the wild and the domestic?

I have problems with accessing Guardian and certain other articles and Youtubes, they get stubborn and ornery, so I couldn't read either one. Perhaps I need to take my laptop in for a cleansing???

When I access a Guardian website, it assimilates the content erratically and endlessly. And when things finally settle down, I can't scroll up 'n down.

My poor old computer is in its last gasp, but Guardian articles always come up with no problem. I too contribute to it, I see it as a reliable news source.

I watched a TV programme several years ago. think it was called Chasing The Wild Chickpea. The man took several months to finally find some growing wild, in harsh conditions. Similar story, farmers were finding it hard to grow modern breeds of chickpea. They needed far more water and fertiliser, and many small farmers found the cost too high.

Sorry, I don't know what "assimilates the content" means. I'm trying to be helpful, Grulla. Clicking on a Guardian link should take you to the complete article which you can read unobstructed, unlike some websites that require a subscription or demand that you eliminate all ads. "Assimilate" things to take in, grasp or understand. Maybe you need a different verb to describe your experience.
