Informative article. One thing that's abundantly clear to me is the experts don't know diddly squat about COVID-19 and children. Children have been kept in a bubble since schools shut down mid-March. The outbreak at this summer camp is a harbinger of things to come. Local school officials need to be almost clairvoyant as they proceed to open schools, allowing hundreds of fearless children to cluster together in one place for the better part of 6 hours a day. It's a scary proposition from where I sit.

And several states, including New York, are prepared to fully open. I foresee a catastrophic situation in the making.

I'm very suspicious of New York's decision to fully open schools, especially since the NY City Health Commissioner--Oxiris Barbot--resigned on Tuesday expressing her disappointment with the way Mayor DeBlasio handled the pandemic--whatever that means. I'm painfully reminded as I watch how decisions are being made to open, or not open, schools that all politicians--including local school board chiefs, state & county superintendents, mayors, & governors--make decisions based, in large measure, on politics. Sadly, the public will never know the degree of politics involved in these decisions, but the public will ultimately pay the price.

My younger daughter is an educational consultant in NYC and a former member of the city's department of education. I get the impression that of all the decision makers involved, teachers seem to be the least often consulted.

I'm familiar with at least one school district (Fairfax County, Virginia) that actually surveyed teachers and parents for their preferences regarding reopening schools. They could opt for: 1. all virtual (online); 2. all in-person instruction; or 3. a hybrid of the two. The majority of parents & teachers opted for all online. So, the County decided that all 180,000 students would begin the upcoming school year all online.
