    As countries consider back-to-school strategies for the fall, a coronavirus outbreak at a Jerusalem high school offers a cautionary tale.

    JERUSALEM — As the United States and other countries anxiously consider how to reopen schools, Israel, one of the first countries to do so, illustrates the dangers of moving too precipitously.
    Confident it had beaten the coronavirus and desperate to reboot a devastated economy, the Israeli government invited the entire student body back in late May.

    They only had a month or so left of school when they reopened. It's a pity they didn't just wait. Now it seems they are planning on reopening in September with a lot more precautions in place.

    If more than 5 percent of COVID tests are positive--over a 2-week period--then most health professionals don't believe schools should reopen in that community. In addition, the number of positive tests should be trending downward over that 2-week period. During the week of Aug. 4, only 16 states were showing a 5 percent of less positive rate.
