Default Corona Virus Doctors Battle Another Scourge: Misinformation

Physicians say they regularly treat people more inclined to believe what they read on Facebook than what a medical professional tells them.

An emergency room doctor in Illinois was accused in April of profiting from naming coronavirus as the cause of a patient’s death, a rumor spreading online.
An internist in New York treated a vomiting patient in May who drank a bleach mixture as part of a fake virus cure found on YouTube.
And in June a paramedic in Britain aided a clearly sick man who had refused to go to a hospital after reading misleading warnings about poor coronavirus treatment on social media.

So, if physicians are concerned about the misleading info. people are reading on Facebook, why don't they take to Facebook and correct the record. "If you can't beat, then join them." People are going to read info. on social media platforms. It's high time medical professionals get on social media and spread what they believe to be the truth!!

"Doctors say patients regularly resist their counsel, more inclined to believe what they read on Facebook than what a medical professional tells them. The falsehoods, they say, have undermined efforts to get people to wear masks and fueled a belief that the seriousness of the disease is overblown. Some doctors say they face abuse when they participate in online discussions to correct the record."
Facebook has made an attempt, though not what I would consider a concerted effort, to delete inaccurate and misleading information. The difficulty is twofold, I think. One is that our president has repeatedly labeled news organizations in general and journalists specifically as fake news, discouraging the public from believing any scientific opinions or real medical advice they hear or read from the media. The second is a kind of confirmation bias. Evolutionary psychologists have adopted the term "hardwired" to describe instincts we seem to have imbedded in our brain circuitry. And it's a good fit, because it can accurately describe certain reactions, like emotion over reason, that seem to govern much of our behavior. A number of complex reasons account for our inclination to accept and act upon emotion rather than rationality... And thus we fight against the advice to wear masks despite evidence that it curtails the spread of a highly contagious virus. We are not rational creatures.
