    The organic food and beverages market is expected to grow at a rate of 14 percent from 2017 until 2021, according to a new market research report by Technavio.
    The report identifies three major market trends driving this growth, a major one of which is innovation in products and new product launches.
    “Due to the presence of a number of small and international brands, the organic food and beverages market is experiencing high competition,” said Manjunath Reddy, a lead analyst at Technavio, in a news release. “To maintain market share and customer base, vendors are trying to launch innovative food products. Manufacturers are developing new varieties of organic food by formulating new ingredient combinations, and flavors.”

    Organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Researchers found that people who ate the most organic food had a 24% reduced risk of cancer compared to those who ate the least.

    Be careful. This growth in organic food sales brings growth in "fake" organic products. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) is responsible for certifying organic products, and alerting consumers that a product is organic via a green & white seal on the product. Problem: USDA can't possibly certify every product; they contract with hundreds of organizations, called "certifiers," to help certify products both domestically and internationally. Unfortunately, some of these certifiers have been caught selling the USDA certification to companies for products that do not meet USDA organic requirements. This is nothing new; however, we can probably expect this problem to increase with the growth in organic sales. Solution: when you purchase an organic product, look for other certifying seals on the product in addition to the USDA seal. There are a number of other organizations that have set organic requirements beyond USDA organic standards, and their seals can be found next to the USDA seal. Caveat Emptor!!
