Default COVID-19 Vaccine Trial Participant Has Serious Neurological Symptoms

    September 9, 2020

The participant who triggered a global shutdown of AstraZeneca’s Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trials was a woman in the United Kingdom who experienced neurological symptoms consistent with a rare but serious spinal inflammatory disorder called transverse myelitis, the drug maker’s chief executive, Pascal Soriot, said during a private conference call with investors on Wednesday morning.
The woman’s diagnosis has not been confirmed yet, but she is improving and will likely be discharged from the hospital as early as Wednesday, Soriot said.

So as of Wednesday we still have no confirmation that this inflammatory condition was or was not a direct cause of the vaccine. Not helpful.

AstraZeneca says it's still trying to determine whether the woman's illness is linked to the vaccine. However, during the CEO's outreach to shareholders, he admitted that this was not the first time Phase II/III trials had been halted. He stated that in July trials were halted due to another woman experiencing neurological problems after taking the vaccine. So, this is twice now.

I think this is probably not unusual in trials ( it doesn't all go smoothly ) but the public don't hear of it. This particular vaccine trial has received so much publicity we are aware of every step along the way.

Julieanne, I agree this is not unusual in trials. What makes this a little different is the huge public mistrust that already exist here in the U.S. around COVID vaccine development, due to the involvement of politicians in this matter overshadowing the medical experts. Adding to the mistrust, the CEO of AstraZeneca did not alert the public about the first halt in trials in July, and he delayed alerting the public to this latest halt for 48 hours, while alerting shareholders almost immediately. Again, under normal circumstances, these events would not be unusual. But, because COVID vaccine development has become such a political hot potato in the U.S., this is just one more thing to amplify public mistrust.
