Default 'A savagely broken food system': Cory Booker wants radical reform ... now

Exclusive: US senator says everybody loses – except the massive corporations that have taken over America’s food industry

From a viral pandemic to the movement for racial justice to the worsening climate crisis, Senator Cory Booker says the massive challenges facing the US right now are all tied to a “savagely broken food system”.
And last week, his most recent challenge to that system gained new momentum, when a coalition of 300 farm, food, and environmental advocacy organizations sent a letter to Congress urging legislators to pass a bill that would eventually eliminate the country’s largest concentrated animal feeding operations (Cafos).
Speaking exclusively to the Guardian, Booker, a New Jersey senator who ran for the democratic presidential nomination earlier this year, says: “Nobody seems to be calling out how multinational, vertically integrated industrial agricultural companies are threatening American wellbeing, and I just think that the more people learn about these practices, the more shocked they are.

So why isn't Sen. Cory Booker (or the news article) mentioning the Prime Act???

Possibly because it got no publicity? Your post is the first I've heard of it, but you can be sure I'm going to spread the news. This is an issue that has affected me directly for years! I've had to get around it by arranging for customers to pay for their side of lamb or pork before it's even weighed… Meaning that it now belongs to them as it trots into the slaughterhouse.

The Covid19 fiasco helped bring this slaughterhouse Prime Act issue to the surface, due to the potential of large scale meat packing workers in a concentrated facility contracting the Coronavirus thereby adversely affecting the food supplyline.

Making it easier for local business folks, ranchers, and farmers to ONCE AGAIN operate meatpacking slaughterhouses locally with minimal complications would, among other things, reduce the concentration and vulnerability of compromised meat distribution due to epidemics.

From where I live, I'd have to drive at least 2-3 hours east near Caballo, NM to access a surviving slaughter house, or 2 hours west to Willcox, AZ for another local meat packing plant. I had a (late) friend in nearby Lordsburg, NM whose family ran a local slaughter house for many years but was forced out of business due to overly burdensome government regulations. The unused masonry slaughter house facility building still stands. Support the Prime Act:

Maine is a big state and more particularly, a tall state! I'm fortunate to have two slaughterhouses within an hour's drive, but neither has a federal meet inspector on hand. To truck or trailer livestock to such a facility would mean several hours each way — essentially impossible for farmers even on a large scale. That's why the Prime Act is so badly needed.

We have one slaughterhouse on the island, called the abattoir. It has been broken down and non-functional for so long that no animals have been slaughtered for years. Of course, the supply of local beef which I had stored in the freezer long ago has been eaten and is gone. I have not eaten any beef or pork since then. Soon come, soon come.

At least the fishermen still catch fish.

Here is just one more reason for localized meat packing plants, slaughter houses, and various local meat co-ops: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chicken...hs-close-week/
