Default Black Soldier Fly Maggots Feed On Food waste

Unlike cockroach farming, this can be done on a small, backyard scale. I did it a few years ago, but with no chickens or fish to feed, I gave a lot away. Perfect for a closed system like aquaponics.

All of these proposals and methods to turn food waste into some sort of productive outcome, e.g. new people food… Well, I'm all in favor of them! Original and useful!

Using black soldier fly maggots to treat organic waste really took off in developing countries in the late 1990s when the UN identified the inability to dispose of solid waste as the second most serious problem for these countries.

Astonishing that I never heard of this until now.

I've been searching to identify negative aspects of the black soldier flies larvae (BSFL), and, so far, I can't find anything. In fact, BSFL has also proven good for the environment. According to a 2011 United Nations report, rotting food emits tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When BSFL eat rotting food, they minimize CO2 and other greenhouse gases, according to researchers.
