Default 10 Herbs And Supplements For Menopause

Menopause is the natural decline of female reproductive hormone production and conclusion of a woman’s menstrual cycles. It usually begins during your 40s or 50s (1Trusted Source).
Common menopause symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, chills, night sweats, weight gain, irregular periods, labile moods, decreased sex drive, poor sleep, bone loss, headaches, anxiety, and depression (2Trusted Source).
Since it’s a completely natural process, treatments focus primarily on symptom management. A variety of pharmaceutical drugs are available, but the risk of side effects leads many women to use alternative therapies either alongside — or instead of — conventional treatments (1Trusted Source).

Again, I appear to be an outlier in that I have not experienced any of the side effects or discomfort that might accompany menopause. Over time, I just said goodbye to Aunt Flo. End of story. I wish I understood why it is apparently so hard for so many women.

I have two friends who have had menopause symptoms for 20 years! Another who has had them for about ten years, mainly hot flushes. If you've never experienced them, they don't sound so bad, but they are really unpleasant. Try sitting in your car on a really hot day, wearing full winter clothing. Might give you some idea.

Try having hot flashes whilst crawling through a boiler's steam drum on a nice hot summer day.

I have to say I am very grateful for being exempt. I never had menstrual cramps or PMS either. Maybe it's my good genes?

I was glad to see the herb vitex (also called agnus castus and chasteberry, among other monikers) on the list. This was readily available in capsule form here when I needed it for a couple of bouts of very heavy, long-lasting bleeding between months of no periods at all. I guess that was the peri-menopause stage. This herb immediately reduced the bleeding significantly, and stopped it very soon.

In looking it up now, I found an interesting site written by a naturopathic doctor with lots of good information on this herb and different situations it can be used for. It has a few cautions, too. I recommend it if you're thinking of using vitex. One interesting thing she says about vitex is that it regulates all sorts of menstrual irregularities. I think herbs that do that are amazing and wonderful! They must go right to the root of the problem and make that root healthier, make it work the way it's meant to.

Pictures are highly suspect. Most boilers are not large enough to walk around inside. This is why we are called "boiler crawlers".

A little surprised not to see Omega-3 fish oil on the list. The friends and relatives I've recommended them to over the years tell me they've experienced good relief, especially from the flashes.
