Default The Toll of Stress on Your Immune System

    Article Summary:

    • One study found that people who experience considerable stress may have a greater likelihood of developing an autoimmune disorder.
    • Prolonged stress raises the body’s cortisol levels and may lead to weight gain, elevated blood pressure, memory difficulties, and impaired immune function.
    • To help, you may need to take a break from the news for a bit and read a relaxing book, meditate, stretch, get some fresh air, or take time to enjoy a hobby or creative project at home. Look for supplements that contain Valerian root, Kava Kava, ashwagandha, or L-theanine.

Stress is pervasive, especially in today's world. My Granny use to say, "Life is a 4-letter word with the two middle letters spelling the word "if." Life is full of "ifs." A lot of uncertainty, iffy stuff will happen in life. But, it's not so much what happens, as it is how you deal with, react to, what happens to you. I try to always remember that I can't control everything that happens to me, but I can always control how I react to it. I take a lot of deep breaths, and strive relentlessly to live a stress-free life, starting with distancing myself from people and things that add stress to my life.

Your granny was a wise woman. Funny, that reminded me of a similar adage I posted on the wall of the group home where I worked. It was a locked secure facility for troubled, addicted adolescents. The morning shift leader posted the day's schedule on a big whiteboard in the kitchen. Some sort of brief inspirational message was always included, and that was one of them: it's not what happens to you, it's how you deal with it!
