Default 9 Foods That Shouldn't Be Consumed Raw

We're all very well aware that eating raw meat can be really dangerous for our health, but we're still in the dark when it comes to many other food items. This is especially true in regard to plant-based foods, as most people think that all veggies and fruit can be safely consumed raw, which is just not true. Some surprising examples of plant foods that should never be eaten raw are eggplants, potatoes, and beans. Find out why these and several other ordinary foods can be dangerous when consumed uncooked below.

I would object to eggs and milk. The days of filthy henhouses and contaminated dairies are far behind us. A few states still legislate against raw milk but it's far more common and commercially available than you might think. And it is so beneficial that it is definitely worth the choice if you have such a choice. My children were all raised on our raw Jersey and Guernsey milk, and though I never drink it, I buy it from my Amish neighbors when I am making something that calls for milk, like a chowder. As for raw eggs, who among us hasn't enjoyed homemade eggnog at Christmas?

For some reason I can't access the link, so I don't know what other foods are mentioned. But I agree completely with you, Islander, about milk and eggs, with the caveat that I wouldn't eat supermarket eggs raw, and in fact, I never buy them. We have a good supplier of organic eggs.

    As do I, Pattypans.
And the link has been corrected. My apologies for that.

It seems it would be a shame to cook most sprouts (mung bean sprouts being an exception). I wonder if the same alleged problems would be present if you sprouted seeds at home? I used to do that a lot--I love sprouts!--but haven't been able to get the seeds I want. Even the organc producers who sold them several years ago can't find the seeds anymore, either.

I completely agree with this, Pattypans. I'm assuming the article addresses the population at large, the general public that buys supermarket sprouts. I can remember several recalls of contaminated sprouts, perhaps because their growth and packaging require a lot of handling. At any rate, I'm convinced that sprouts you grow at home will be 100% safe.

If my memory serves me correctly, there is one small deterrent to eating raw eggs. Consuming raw eggs has been linked to a "biotin" deficiency. Biotin is a member of the vit. B family. It is in almost all hair, skin, & nails supplements. Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, and avidin binds to biotin and blocks its absorption. Cooked egg whites do not contain avidin. So, if you're concerned about healthy skin, hair, nails, liver, and nervous system, consuming raw eggs on a regular basis may not be the way to go.

You're right, Mr. Wiz. Raw egg whites do have that problem. One workaround is to eat only the yolks raw.

Agree. Another workaround is to add a biotin supplement to a meal in which you don't eat raw eggs. I take a B Complex vit. supplement that contains biotin and all the other B vits. because they all work together. The thing is: B vits. are water soluble so they aren't stored by the body. They're fragile too....almost everything interacts with B vits.

I think one would have to eat a lot of raw eggs to develop a biotin deficiency.

Absolutely, eating just a few raw eggs per week should not result in a biotin deficiency for most people. However, everybody's different. So, just wanted to mention the small possibility for those who consume lots of raw eggs on a regular basis.
