Cloth Face Masks That Can Be Disinfected by The Sun

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have become accustomed to wearing cotton face masks in public places. However, viruses and bacteria that stick to the mask could be transferred elsewhere when the wearer removes or touches it. Now, researchers reporting in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces have developed a special type of cotton face mask that kills up to 99.9999% of bacteria and viruses within 60 minutes of daylight exposure.

High technology masks are above my pay grade, but I feel fairly confident in the masks I am using. Once laundered, I lay them out on the table on the deck on sunny days — just extra insurance that they are absolutely sanitary. In my area the number of infections is significantly low. The majority of shoppers are masked, and so am I whenever I go out in public. I don't feel that my age puts me at risk, and I refuse to live in fear.

Perhaps I am too cavalier with my mask, but I just stick it in the laundry and air dry it in the sunshine. Around here everybody, except for some of the tourists, wears a mask in all public indoor places, such as stores, post office, business offices, etc. We have had few cases, but not none. Just last week a close friend of mine died of Covid.

Maurya, I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. So far no one I know personally has been sick at all, and overall Maine's numbers are fairly good; the few outbreaks we've seen have come from hotspots — weddings and church gatherings— where two deadly factors combined: density and duration. Most people are compliant about wearing masks in public.
