Environmental groups call for salmon farming to be moved onshore after 130,000 fish escape through tear in net

Huon Aquaculture has been savaged after another mass salmon outbreak in Tasmania that could threaten native marine life, with conservationists labelling escape management practices in the state “a circus”.
About 130,000 farmed Atlantic salmon swam to freedom after a tear was found in the netting of a fish pen in Storm Bay on Wednesday. Huon’s chief executive, Peter Bender, said there was a “significant loss of fish”.

There is little doubt in my mind that these salmon fish farm escapes are being done purposely to dilute and squash the competition from wild natural sources such as Sockeyes.

Without knowing the number of fish in the original containment, I would seriously doubt that Huon would sacrifice 130,000 fish for no apparent advantage. What it says to me is simply poor management.

Business being what it is, (or can be), perhaps the fish farm became vulnerable to supply and demand issues with operating cost losses, and therefore let some stock "escape", and at the same time mingle with the wild salmon, thereby killing two birds with one stone???
