Heinz Is Developing a Paper Ketchup Bottle

Heinz and Pulpex are developing a paper-based ketchup bottle. The Kraft Heinz Company Heinz is ready to move on from squeezable plastic bottles into the “Ketchup Bottle of Tomorrow” — a bottle made entirely of sustainably sourced wood pulp.

The company announced its partnership with Pulpex to develop a paper bottle for Heinz ketchup. The new bottles will be paper-based, renewable, and recyclable and sourced from sustainable materials, according to a Heinz press release.

The paper bottles are said to be a step toward Kraft Heinz’s goals for sustainability, which include making all of its product packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025 and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

A paper bottle of anything is a small but positive step in the right direction toward addressing climate change. But scanning the article, I see no mention of the process involved in making any kind of paper container leakproof. Surely this will involve chemicals of some sort. Can't wait to find out what they are.

But only used once and thrown away, not sitting around for weeks or months. It's possible a natural type of wax is used to make the bottles waterproof, in which case I imagine they would be advertising that.

It seems to me that would be OK in certain situations where the product is biodegradable and compostable.
