    Default Thyroid Problems and Emotional Health

    Mary Shoman has been interviewing Richard, Karilee and Georjana Shames about their new book, Thyroid Mind Power: The Proven Cure for Hormone-Related Depression, Anxiety, and Memory Loss.
    She posted a Q and A about the book on her blog, which is very interesting.

    Ms. Shoman writes:

    "MARY SHOMON: You mention that thyroid hormone might relieve severe depression, even when there is no clear evidence of hypothyroidism. Can you tell us a bit more about how you cover this in Thyroid Mind Power?

    RICHARD & KARILEE SHAMES: Many of our patients have had the bad fortune of being only borderline low thyroid on their thyroid testing, which is too often simply the inadequate TSH test. The one symptom bothering them is depression. With no physical symptoms and no positive diagnostic thyroid tests, these folks are often given an antidepressant, and/or sent to a psychotherapist. Many research studies have shown that in this exact population, when thoroughly tested, up to 35% of them have thyroid imbalance as the major cause of their depression. Other studies have shown that when these people are properly treated with simple thyroid medicine, their severe and at times intractable depression resolves."

    I have always felt the body and mind are related, and many emotional disorders have a physical component. With the onset of mass-marketed anti-depressants which are being handed out like candy many people, especially women, are being mis-diagnosed, over-drugged, and not having the underlying disease treated.

    Ms. Shoman writes:
    "In the book, the Shames have stated that we need to clearly identify and help three key categories of people that need better thyroid care:

    the undiagnosed;
    the misdiagnosed; and
    those who have been diagnosed but who are inadequately treated.
    In Thyroid Mind Power, they have applied their integrative style -- combining the best of conventional medicine, alternative medicine, nutrition, mind-body health, and lifestyle issues -- to these three groups, and how to resolve their important thyroid-related health concerns including depression, anxiety, rage, addictions, sleep disorders, autism, attention deficit issues, and mood cycles."

    I found the link between thyroid and sleep disorders, autism, and ADD very interesting. I am going to have to read this one!
