Default Lettuce Recall Due to Listeria

    By the CNN Wire Staff
    September 30, 2011

A California lettuce grower has recalled 2,498 cartons of chopped or shredded romaine lettuce shipped to wholesale food service distributors in 19 states and Canada over concerns the produce may be contaminated with the same bacteria that caused 13 deaths in an outbreak traced to tainted cantaloupes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and True Leaf Farms initially reported the recall of 90 cartons of chopped and shredded romaine lettuce on Thursday, saying a random sample detected listeria monocytogenes in one bag pulled from a lot shopped on September 12 and September 13. Later Thursday, True Leaf issued a statement saying the FDA asked the company to expand the recall.

It's quite surprising... As far as I know listeria may be caused by unhealthy foods, such as deli meats and ready-to-go foods. Here you can read more about listeria symptoms and causes. I've never heard that lettuce can be contaminated with this infection.

I don't think "unhealthy foods" are any more likely to be contaminated by listeria than any other food. Listeria is more likely to be caused by careless handling than anything else. Consider the case of the cantaloupes that were contaminated due to dirty warehousing procedures. Fresh produce is very easily contaminated by bacteria, which means we should wash absolutely everything before eating it.

Good advice. I used not to wash produce labeled organic, forgetting how many non-organic hands had touched it!

Why would anyone want to buy chopped or shredded lettuce anyway? Too busy to pick up a knife?

Julie, have you looked at all the convenience foods lately? People want to grab a package of pre-chopped vegetables for stir-fry. Of pre-made mac & cheese. What could be simpler than making a cheese sauce while the macaroni is cooking? Is it the perception of convenience?

Oh yes, I see them, and avoid. But I haven't come across lettuce - yet. I see bags of lettuce leaves, but not chopped. The moment you chop up a vegetable it starts losing nutrients.

I think the worst convenience food I've seen was bags of cooked frozen rice, imported at that. I know people are busy, but how hard is it to set rice to boil while you are making the rest of the meal?
