Default More Facebook Friends Equals Bigger Brains

I'm a bit speechless at this one but had to post it

People with lots of Facebook friends tend to have areas of the brain that are larger than those of online social network users with fewer friends, British researchers say.

The researchers found that the number of Facebook friends that students had correlated with the size of the gray matter in several areas of the brain.

"We were interested in understanding whether social networks and our participation in them is reflected in brain structure and function," lead researcher Dr. Geraint Rees, a Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Research Fellow at University College London, said during a Tuesday press conference.

"What we've shown is an association between the number of friends on Facebook and certain areas of the brain and the structure of those areas," Rees said.
But, "a correlation doesn't imply causation," he added.

Just a reminder — you can have a bigger brain and still do stupid things on FaceBook. I see quite a few young people posting too much information that erodes their privacy, IMHO.

Sounds in part like the chicken/egg dichotomy: the more you learn how to navigate complex websites, the better you get at navigating websites, i.e. brain enlarges.* I think number of friends is largely meaningless. In FB as in life, we have a few close friends, then a wider circle, then an even wider one.... and those who are gamers (like the Mafia people) end up with huge friends lists as players. Nothing to do with social interaction.

    • Sorry, I don't think there is a parallel with penis enlargement.

I have a friend who deliberately set out to get as many FB friends as possible (marketing purposes) and quickly got over 2000. Recently he culled it back to about 65 (real friends). It just depends on whether you really want a lot of "friends" on FB. No one has thousands of close friends.

eh? What kind of research is this? The number of friends on Facebook is meaningless. There are people with 2k-3k friends. Practically, how is that even possible? And some people just keep on adding friends blindly of mafia mars and other similar games.

LabDoc, Facebook is a social networking site that allows you to display indiscreet candid pictures of you nude, drunk, stoned and passed out. This comprehensive site, the brainchild of Mark Zuckerburg, thoughtfully archives every picture and stupid remark you ever posted...just waiting for some future employer to do a background check on you. An incredible resource!
